Introducing the TRP Holder Class
A TRP (Temporary Resident Permit) is a document that authorizes a person who is inadmissible for a work or student visa to enter or stay in Canada. These are issued for people who do not meet the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to enter or stay in Canada as temporary or permanent residents.
If a person traveling to Canada is deemed
inadmissible, the family they are traveling with may also not be allowed to
enter the country. The candidate along with all their family members
must apply for their own Temporary Resident Permits before they enter
Canada.
The TRP is only issued in exceptional circumstances by
IRCC and allows people who are inadmissible for other visas or permits to visit
or stay in Canada. The IRCC reviews each TRP application and decides its
validity period.
How to Apply
for a TRP?
When applying for a TRP, the candidate must first
prove that their trip or reason to stay in Canada is extremely necessary. The
procedure to apply differs amongst the countries you are applying from. The
application fee when applying is $200CAD which is non-refundable. A TRP can be issued
for up to a time period of three years. The candidate can apply for an
extension depending on their circumstances.
Once the candidate has applied for the TRP, if the TRP
is valid for at least 6 months, they can apply for a work or study
permit.
If the candidate applies for TRP at the same time and
place as applying for a work permit, study permit, or both, the application fee
for the TRP will be waived off.
Who can
apply for the TRP?
People who are not eligible for renewal of status or
are in Canada and are inadmissible, subject to a report or reportable for
violation of the Act, or do not otherwise meet the requirements of the Act can
also apply for the TRP.
People who are deemed inadmissible and wish to enter
Canada if an officer decides that their reason is justified can apply for aTRP.
Cancellation
or Renewal of the TRP
A TRP may be cancelled at any time at the discretion
of the IRCC. A Temporary Resident Permit holder cannot leave and re-enter
the country unless they are authorized to do so. Before the TRP expires, its
holder must apply for a renewal or leave Canada upon expiry.
